Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Wall painting at Kunstinstituut Melly - FKA Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art
The Danish artist Henrik Plenge Jakobsen made a wall painting in the shape of a target, painted with primary colours. The statement “Everything is wrong” was placed across the circular target, a quotation from the album of the same name by American musician Moby. This wall painting provided a critical reflection on the political climate of the 1990s. In tandem, a small plane with a banner saying "No future” flew above Rotterdam during the opening days of the exhibition, a quote from the chorus chant of the Sex Pistols' God Save the Queen.
