Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Sculptures at Museumpark 9

Inside the modernist villa opposite Boijmans van Beuningen, Korean-French artist Koo Jeong-a made a series of small modelled copies of the same villa from sugar cubes and wooden cigar boxes. Subject to decay due to the use of these fragile materials, the slow melting of the sugar cube sculptures became a metaphor for the historical neglect of modernist architecture.
