Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

South Korean artist Kimsooja used colourful Korean bed coverings which were traditionally given to newly married couples as a promise of long life and happiness. For Manifesta 1, she placed these textiles in a new context, using them to dress all the tables of the restaurant of the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, where she served homemade traditional Korean food, accompanied by music.
