Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Archivo F.X., begun by Spanish artist Pedro G.Romero in the 1990s, included images, audiovisual documents and texts which reproduced different examples of anti-clerical political iconoclasm in Spain. This installation focused on the short period of communist leadership in Murcia in the 1930s. The artist highlighted incidents where communist symbols were inserted in some of Murcia’s principal religious sites, for example the cross in the cathedral was replaced by a hammer and sickle and an antenna for Radio Lenin was installed in the bell tower of San Antolín.
