Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Sculpture installation at Winter Palace

The Italian artist Lara Favaretto made an installation for the Hercules Room of the New Hermitage, a room that holds ancient Greek sculptures from the fourth century B.C. In this context her concrete shapes, produced at a factory close to St. Petersburg, created a bold and blunt contrast to the time-honoured traditional forms of sculpture and representations of the human body.
