Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Installation at the inner courtyard of the new General Staff Building

Swiss artist Thomas Hirschhorn created a real-scale construction of a communal building block from communist times that collapsed. The model allowed the viewer to see the interiors of the communal apartments, which had historical furniture and works by revolutionary Russian constructivists such as Malevich. The meaning of the title, “ABSCHLAG” is that an important part of a whole has been cut off, opening up something that used to be hidden away and forgotten.

This site-work made of tape, glued papier-mâché and other fragile materials was created by 15 students who were in residence at the new General Staff Building for a period of six weeks.
