Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Mural at General Staff Building
Russian artist Pavel Pepperstein’s works are collages of popular cultural imagery and critical commentary, drawing on the traditions of surrealism, suprematism, oriental watercolours, pop art, book illustrations, and political caricature. For Manifesta 10 he created an extensive mural that combined elements of pop art with the typical Russian symbol of the Matryoshka doll.
