Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Mixed media installation at the Palazzo Butera and later recreated as a permanent installation in the Orto Botanico of Palermo
Theatre of the Sun by the American collective Fallen Fruit consisted of an installation of lush botanical wallpaper in the Palazzo Butera and was completed by maps of the fruit trees growing around the city. The Public Fruit Map of Palermo indicated the location of hundreds of fruit trees in public and private spaces that are often overlooked and ignored.
