Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Multimedia installation exhibited at Archivio di Stato di Palermo

Protocol no. 90/6 by Italian artist duo MASBEDO was a site-specific video installation that explored the important relationship between Palermo and Italian cinema. The project was a tribute to and rehabilitation of director Vittorio De Seta. He was accused of being a “communist” and controlled by the Italian authorities who could not understand why a nobleman could be interested in the affairs of the humblest workers. The installation consisted of the historical letter accusing De Seta of being a “communist”, which was displayed together with a film of a Sicilian hand-cut puppet representing the filmmaker De Seta. The puppet was moved by the master puppeteer Mimmo Cuticchio.
