Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Manifesta 13 Marseille was one of the only international biennials to take place during the global pandemic COVID-19, the biennial ended earlier than planned due to the second national lockdown

Andreja Kulunčić

Posters in public space

In her project, Croatian artist Andreja Kulunčić questioned Manifesta’s participating artists about their income in 2001 and compared this information with the average annual income of their respective countries. She presented the results on twenty public advertising spaces along with portraits of the artists. These posters made visible the discrepancy between reality and the prejudice regarding artists.
