Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Manifesta 13 Marseille was one of the only international biennials to take place during the global pandemic COVID-19, the biennial ended earlier than planned due to the second national lockdown

Installation at Kunstinstituut Melly - FKA Witte de With

In this installation Swedish artist Carl Michael von Hausswolff evoked the ideas of migration, incarceration and collaboration by putting 25 canaries in a large cage. The artist’s original concept was to have the birds fly freely around the entire exhibition space. However some of the other artists objected and the concept had to be modified, with the birds being placed inside a cage instead. After the closing of Manifesta 1, director Hedwig Fijen took the birds home and cared for them.
