Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Manifesta 13 Marseille was one of the only international biennials to take place during the global pandemic COVID-19, the biennial ended earlier than planned due to the second national lockdown

Sonic installation at Kunsthal Rotterdam

This large ultrasound installation by the Finnish artist duo Tommi Grönlund and Petteri Nisunen was shown for the first time at Manifesta in the recently opened Rotterdam Kunsthal, designed by Rem Koolhaas. In this work, characterised by high frequency tones which came together between two parabolic reflectors, a powerful sonic environment was generated in order to immerse the visitor in both light waves and sound waves that are otherwise imperceptible.
