Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Manifesta 13 Marseille was one of the only international biennials to take place during the global pandemic COVID-19, the biennial ended earlier than planned due to the second national lockdown

Video installation and mixed media at Palazzo Forcella de Seta

This installation by Italian Swiss research and artist duo Forensic Oceanography was composed of four video reconstructions: Liquid Traces (2014) and Death by Rescue (2016), and Mare Clausum (2018) and The Crime of Rescue (2018) made in collaboration with Forensic Architecture. Each part analysed one aspect or event of the European border control systems in the Mediterranean, highlighting the dramatic consequences of these practices for the lives of migrants.
