Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Manifesta 13 Marseille was one of the only international biennials to take place during the global pandemic COVID-19, the biennial ended earlier than planned due to the second national lockdown

Ayse Erkmen, TR

Installation at Huis Boevé, Villa Museumpark 9

This site-specific installation by Turkish artist Ayse Erkmen consisted of the text "Oh, what a nicehouse! I wonder who lives there? I must go in and see!", written onto the outer wall of a 1930smodernist villa designed by Van der Vlugt and owned by Joop van Caldenborgh, one ofRotterdam’s most important art patrons and Chair of Manifesta 1. The text is a quotation takenfrom the fairy taleGoldilocks. It created an ironic undertone referring to the building's modernistarchitecture and its hybrid function as an exhibition space and as a private home.
