Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Manifesta 13 Marseille was one of the only international biennials to take place during the global pandemic COVID-19, the biennial ended earlier than planned due to the second national lockdown

Ibon Aranberri, ES

Installation in public space on the banks of the River Main

The Basque artist Ibon Aranberri reproduced a version of Picasso’s Guernica, created in 1937 after the bombing of the Basque city of Guernica by Franco during the Spanish Civil War. The installation resembled an oversized concrete bus stop with a black steel roof, featuring the painting on the back wall. The chiaroscuro modulations of the original were replaced by starkly contrasting black and white.
