Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Manifesta 13 Marseille was one of the only international biennials to take place during the global pandemic COVID-19, the biennial ended earlier than planned due to the second national lockdown

Wooden construction installed at Ex Alumix in Bolzano

The Bailey Bridge, a quickly assembled, prefabricated bridge, was first used by the Allied Forces in Italy in 1943 when the retreating German and Italian armies destroyed existing bridges. Dutch artist Harold de Bree reconstructed a 27 meter long M1 Bailey Bridge over the pond situated in front of the aluminium factory built by Mussolini’s government. Though the bridge did not reach either of the shores, and was too high for people to cross, it still triggered deep memories of Bozen/Bolzano during the fascist period.
