Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Using live television reportage, French-Danish artist Colonel investigated the theme of Manifesta 8: “in dialogue with Northern Africa”. As part of this process, the artist established a room in San Antón Prison for incursions (what he called "Penetrations"), open to artists from North Africa only. Through this project, he questioned the lack of Northern African representation in contemporary art biennials.
