Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Manifesta 13 Marseille was one of the only international biennials to take place during the global pandemic COVID-19, the biennial ended earlier than planned due to the second national lockdown

Mixed media installation at Palazzo Butera

On the occasion of Manifesta 12, the Italian artist Renato Leotta realized a terracotta flooring recording the signs and traces of ripe fruits fallen from the trees in a citrus garden. This site-specific environmental installation in Palazzo Butera underlined the feudal economic relationship that bind the palace with the agricultural work in the Sicilian countryside and the landscape with architecture.
