Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Manifesta 15 Barcelona will be taking place in Barcelona and 11 surrounding metropolitan cities

Seyni Awa Camara, SN

Seyni Awa Camara's worldview is rooted in timeless truths and stories, shaped by her Wolof heritage and her role in bridging the past and present. Raised by her mother, a potter who initiated her into sculpture from a young age, Camara and her twin brothers underwent a spiritual initiation in the forests of Casamançe (Senegal). She views her sculptures as embodiments of dreams, revelations and fantasies, giving form to narratives and emotions through clay. Her home serves as a “theatre without a stage”, housing a diverse collection ranging from small figurines to towering eight-foot sculptures. Camara's work reflects a spectrum of humanity — good, bad, beautiful, ugly — crafted in her yard and fired in an open-hearth kiln. She attributes the sometimes-distorted faces of her creations to our neglect of ancestors and portrays profound themes such as maternal protection and societal flight through her art.
