Trained in fine arts in Barcelona, Fina Miralles undertook residencies in South America, France and Italy before settling in Cadaqués in 1999. In the early 1970s, she emerged as one of Catalonia’s pioneering conceptual artists, staging actions in nature involving trees, earth, water and her own body. With simplicity and conviction, these actions highlight the dialogue between nature and artifice, critiquing social and political issues amidst late Francoist Spain. Her favoured themes include totalitarianism, patriarchy and violence. Miralles played a pivotal role in founding and managing key contemporary art spaces like Sala Vinçon in Barcelona, Sala Tres in Sabadell and Espai 13 at the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona. In the 1980s, influenced by her travels, her work shifted towards spirituality, with lyrical and straightforward gestures in painting and graphics. Having reembraced performance art at the dawn of the new millennium, she engages in dialogue with the land, sea and other natural rhythms. Recent years have seen her publish poetic works and exhibit widely, including at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid) and the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona.
