Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.
In this photograph by Italian artist Simone Berti, the protagonists were placed within the confines of a metal structure, which gave emphasis to the severity of the pose so characteristic of group portraits. The composition was particularly reminiscent of old snapshots for which photographers required their subjects to remain as still as possible for a period long enough to produce an acceptable photograph.
