Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Video exhibited at Manifattura Tabacchi in Rovereto
The video by Italian artist Deborah Ligorio referred to the engineering project by the Montecatini Company which involved building an artificial lake to connect two natural lakes, Resia and Curon. In the process several villages in the neighbourhood were submerged. The film concentrated on the portrait of a church bell tower still visible above the water, a metaphor of everyday struggle and adaptation.
