Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Installation at Centrum Beeldende Kunst Rotterdam / Villa Ackermann
This collaboration between Scottish artist Douglas Gordon and Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija was implemented in a squatted hotel in Witte de Withstraat. Tiravanija’s furniture design was linked to a series of film presentations by Gordon, composed of films censored by the Dutch authorities in the 1920s and 1930s. Visitors were invited to watch these films sitting on beanbags and enjoying drinks in a bar designed by Tiravanija.
