Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.
This project by the Turkish artist Asli Çavuşoğlu explored the link between landscape and nationalist narratives by amassing a collection of utopian paintings of Swiss landscapes from antique stores and flea markets. The paintings were examined and X-rayed by art conservator Evren Kıvançer who then used restoration techniques to remove layers of varnish, revealing what lay beneath the surface.
