Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Performance and video installation at Istituto Padre Messina
This video by Spanish artist Jordi Colomer depicted the journey of a fishing boat that had been transformed into a combination of a tourist ship, coastguard and an observatory. This boat sailed from Sant’Erasmo Marina along Palermo’s southern periphery with members of various Palermitan communities on board. Several boats accompanied the transformed boat, as a secular version of the annual procession of the patron of Palermo, Santa Rosalia, researching and telling the stories of the local fisherman communities.
