Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

In 1999 the Dutch artist Joost Conijn built an aircraft. He exhibited it on the roof of De Fabriek in Eindhoven and planned its first flight for late 1999 in the middle of the Sahara desert. The entire process from the aircraft’s design to its installation on the rooftop of De Fabriek as well as the testing of its functions, its transportation and finally the first flight tests, was recorded by the artist on film.
