Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Conrad Shawcross, GB

Floor sculpture exhibited at Casa Ciriza

This sculpture by British artist Conrad Shawcross was made from one continuous spiral of wood that perpetually turned on itself. From a distance it appeared stationary but when the viewers approached the work, they realised that it was moving. With this skeletal structure, which has no coherent interior or exterior, top or bottom, middle or end, the artist denies function while being conscious of the complexities and dimensions of time.
