Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Hito Steyerl, DE

Short film screened at Museo San Telmo.

This film by German artist Hito Steyerl was based on the life of her friend Andrea Wolf, who, prior to her assassination as a suspected Kurdish terrorist in 1998, was accused of being a member of the Red Army faction in Germany. Using Wolf’s biography, the film questioned the concept of “terrorism” by reflecting on the roles of perpetrator and victim. The film became an elegy to a deceased friend, as well as a commentary on the defunct ideologies of revolution.
