Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Tanja Widmann, AT

Tanja Widmann's film installation evolves from a collage of texts taking up the idea of modernity as an attitude. In the guise of the young girl, die Moderne, modernity finds itself in an ambiguous state. The utopian idea of the audacity to promote oneself with the potential of a new life form has become a skill, under the new spirit of capitalism. Witold Gombrowicz's novel Ferdydurke (1938), Raw Materials for a Theory of the Young-Girl (2001) from the French philosophical journal Tiqqun, Yoko Ono's Why and excerpts from the casting show Germany's Next Top Model, provide the script for a video-performance which is connected to other objects in the space.

Tanja Widmann sometimes takes the role of an author in the singular, more often she produces under the form of a label: TJW/ (TJW by). Hard Currency. Revaluation is under the label of TJW/ Ihu Anyanwu, Verena Dengler, Matthias Ermert, Sofia Goscinski, Yasmina Haddad, Matthias Halibrand, Johannes Porsch, propaganda, Verena Rabl.
