Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Mixed media installation and performance presented at Manifattura Tabacchi, Rovereto
Swiss artist Christian Philipp Müller, concerned with issues of national identity and the construction of borders, crossed Austria’s green borders eight times illegally. This performance was accompanied by an installation in which the artist researched the history of a package of Apollo-Soyuz Soviet tobacco, which he had found by chance during his first visit to the former tobacco buildings, Manifattura Tabacchi in Rovereto.
