Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Stephan Dillemuth, DE

For this project German artist Stephan Dillemuth created a cage made from plaster, with the help of students from the art academy in Murcia. A video projected inside the cage showed a conversation between an artist and a prisoner about research, knowledge and the responsibility of artists. The work was a reflection on the refuge of the hermit in his deliberate withdrawal from the world. It also examined the idea of freedom as access to knowledge.
