Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Simon Fujiwara, GB

In this installation British artist Simon Fujiwara explored the elusive nature of truth. He created a scenario in which a group of British men were witnesses to an extraordinary discovery: a giant stone phallus was unearthed under the foundations of a new museum building in the Arabian desert, leaving people baffled as to what to do with it. No records existed of this event and the truth came down to the differing versions of these five men who were working on the construction site, and whose studio is “reproduced” in this installation.
