Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

The British artist Tris Vonna-Michell used two interconnected spaces in Pavilion 1 for his installation: a former municipal office, which had been modified as part of a new installation; and the adjoining space, which was occupied by a site-specific slide projection, synchronised to a recorded spoken narrative.
