Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Rocco Granata, BE

Archival Installation

Manifesta 9 included an installation dedicated to the Italian-Belgian singer Rocco Granata, part of the exhibition 17 Tons. This singer, who was the son of a miner, became famous by recording and releasing his own records after his song Marina had been rejected by several record labels. He later created his own label, arranging and producing songs for other Belgian artists.
