Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Maarten Vanden Eynde, BE

This sculpture by artist Maarten Vanden Eynde was made from melted plastic debris collected from all the five-world ocean’s “gyres”, a system of rotating ocean currents, predominantly caused by significant wind movements. The work constituted a commentary on the issue of plastic pollution in the oceans as well as a reference to the disappearance of coral reefs.
