Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Evgeny Antufiev, RU

Russian artist Evgeny Antufiev worked in collaboration with pastor Martin Rüsch. Eternal Garden was inspired by a quote in the Bible comparing the transience of human life to the wilting
of a flower. The artist was compelled by the oblique connections formed when species are named after deceased famous figures. He adorned the Wasserkirche with bowls of roses named after literary greats, and paid homage to Vladimir Nabokov with a giant rendering of a butterfly suspended from the ceiling, a reference to the writer’sother respected career as a lepidopterist.
