Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Manifesta 13 Marseille was one of the only international biennials to take place during the global pandemic COVID-19, the biennial ended earlier than planned due to the second national lockdown

Party in a bus exhibited at Ex-Alumix in Bolzano

In the summer of 2008, the Swedish anarchist collective Piratbyrån undertook a bus trip from Sweden to Manifesta 7 in Bolzano. The journey took the form of a continuous workshop that aimed to formulate a collaborative statement based on the group’s experiences of the recent conflicts over digital copyright in Scandinavia. The bus was left in Bolzano as part of the exhibition, along with the documentation of Piratbyrån’s work, adding to the debate about the notion of free use of the internet and the conflicting rules of copyright.
