Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Manifesta 13 Marseille was one of the only international biennials to take place during the global pandemic COVID-19, the biennial ended earlier than planned due to the second national lockdown

Installation at General Staff Building

This minimalist installation by Belgian artist Joëlle Tuerlinckx accompanied a text in which she described her vision of art, originally published in Border Notes for Manifesta 3. In that text she compared art to a rope tied in a knot and laid on a table. This image, articulated fourteen years previously, acquired form as a real object in this edition of the biennial.
