Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Manifesta 13 Marseille was one of the only international biennials to take place during the global pandemic COVID-19, the biennial ended earlier than planned due to the second national lockdown

Jorinde Voigt, DE

For this project German artist Jorinde Voight was inspired by Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s description of drifting in a rowing boat on a lake as a condition of total freedom. She reflected on this vision in a drawing inspired by a 1920s racing boat. The boat itself and the drawing, similar in dimension, were included in her installation. Studies for the drawing could be found at the boat-building house where the boat was constructed.
