Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Manifesta 13 Marseille was one of the only international biennials to take place during the global pandemic COVID-19, the biennial ended earlier than planned due to the second national lockdown

Video installation at Palazzo Butera

This video by Swiss artist Uriel Orlow connected the stories of three trees: a cypress planted by St. Benedict, the first black Catholic saint;a Ficus Macrophylla in the former residence of judge Giovanni Falcone who was assassinated by the Mafia in 1992; and an olive tree under which a WWII armistice was signed. These three stories served to symbolise the connection between human lives and nature.
