Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Jelena Jureša is a visual artist and filmmaker who explores issues of cultural identity, gender, the politics of remembering and forgetting and collective violence. She questions historical and political narratives and destabilises ideas of what is true.
Since 2016, she has studied the work of anthropologists and racial hygienists of the Austrian imperial period as well as the politics of oblivion in Austria after the Second World War. Recent projects detect a thread of positions of power, racism, injustice and violence from Belgian coloniaism, Austrian anti-Semitism and the atrocities in Bosnia during the Yugoslav Wars (Aphasia) and echo diasporic voices of displacement and Belgian cultural heritage (Ubundu).
