Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Marie-Claire Messouma Manlanbien is a French artist, finding inspiration in a diverse blend of cultural and religious influences for her art. Her creative approach involves blending elements from Western and American popular culture, the matriarchal Akan culture of Côte d'Ivoire and the Creole culture of Guadeloupe, in a syncretic manner to explore various symbols.
In her work, Manlanbien delves into themes such as feminity, with a special focus on reflections around fertility, and the connection between artisanal traditions and modern society. She expresses herself through a variety of artistic forms, including weaving, embroidery, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, engraving, writing, photography and performance. Her creations form ecosystems where natural and manufactured materials coexist and interact.
Manlanbien's artworks beautifully blend words and forms, capturing the complex connections between humans and all living things, with a special focus on the spiritual dimension.
