Born in Almería, Carlos Pérez Siquier was from a young age captivated by the blinding Mediterranean light. His father, a photography enthusiast, had a small workshop in their attic where young Carlos first saw images develop on paper. At 17, he discovered the French Cine-Photo Magazine, which profoundly influenced him with its humanistic, reality-committed photography. He completed his photography studies at Almería’s School of Art in 1950. In 1956, he began his iconic series La Chanca and co-founded AFAL, the revolutionary group and magazine, with José María Artero. AFAL, crucial in modernising Spanish photography, highlighted Pérez Siquier’s authenticity. Transitioning to colour, he became an international pioneer, blending avant-garde influences with modern social irony, always maintaining an indestructible sense of beauty.
