Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Installation at Šumi Bar

The old Šumi Bar was the historical meeting place for artists, actors and political activists in Ljubljana during the 1970s. Closed for years and awaiting demolition, it was made accessible again to the public by Italian architects collective Gruppo A12. All the spaces and the existing furniture were painted white, while the access was through one of the windows. Inside, strobe lights and the sound of a local radio station created an alienating atmosphere.
