Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Video installation, mixed media at Palazzo Forcella De Seta
This video installation by American artist Laura Poitras highlighted the growing number of American military bases in Sicily. The artist tackled the economic aspects and future developments of this military presence as well as the opposition by Sicilian citizens. The installation was amplified by a film clinic conducted by the artist with local filmmakers and reporting by Henrik Moltke.
