Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Kendell Geers, BE

"Fired Up" is a monument and warning about the risks of Climate Change. The bronze eternal flame by South African/Belgian artist Kendell Geers was cast from a pile of old and discarded car tyres with an eternal flame burning in protest. It paid homage to the workers in the former coal mines of the Campine region and the Ford factory in Genk, connecting the industrial past of the region with its present. It also drew attention to environmental issues associated with those industries such as the reliance on fossil fuels and the polluting effects of the motor industry with an accumulation of material waste.
