Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.
İhsan Ece, TR

Passbilder BRD, Galip Aybet, (Passport Pictures FRG, Galip Aybet ), 1974. Oil on canvas 100 × 80 cm Venue - St. Bonifatius.
İhsan Ece's artistic work focuses on the situation of people with an international history and have migrated. The starting point is the experience that oppression, restriction and the deprivation of freedom can also produce resistance – a resistance that manifests itself in artistic forms of expression. In his works, Ece reflects on the realities of people who have left their homeland for economic and social reasons to live and work in another country. In doing so, he addresses cultural differences, social exclusion and the difficult conditions of arriving. His works are both an artistic form of making these experiences visible and a contribution to a new, migrant culture.
